PBFSA is working with Government
14 April 2023, Johannesburg, South Africa: The Pit Bull Federation of South Africa (PBFSA) and the Centre of Applied Pet Ethology (COAPE) International have joined hands with the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development to create a joint task team to identify short, medium and long term practical approaches to promote safety of all people living with a pit bull and pit bull type dogs, to reduce and prevent injuries and loss of life on all fronts. The aim of the project is to promote the safety of all people living with a pit bull, and pit bull type dogs, to reduce and prevent the loss of life on all fronts. “We at the PBFSA value human life, and as such are deeply saddened and concerned about the widespread human attacks. Both humans and the pit bulls have been placed in danger by the owners who lack the skills and knowledge required to handle power-breeds.” says Jeanette Erasmus, President of PBFSA. Some of the goals will involve reaching all owners of pit bulls and pit bull types to provide basic education and safety measures that are easy and affordable to implement, to ensure the immediate safety of people living around these dogs. Creating accountability regarding the safe keeping of domesticated animals, and supporting the public where needed. The focus here is to assist dog owners in being responsible guardians of their animals. This will include the creation of public awareness on available and supporting legislation. “We encourage owners to be responsible for their dogs and to take ownership of the breed by sterilizing their Pit bulls to help control the breeding rate, don’t turn your pit bulls into fighting dogs, and don’t keep them on a chain or in a cage.” adds Jeanette. A comprehensive DNA study is underway to assist the government with the correct identification of problem animals unique to South African conditions, to promote safety of all people living with a pit bull and pit bull type dogs, to reduce and prevent injuries and loss of life on all fronts.

Why does PBFSA need funding?
The PBFSA’s mission has always been to promote responsible ownership and a positive public perception of Pit Bull-type dogs in South Africa. Through breed-specific legislation advocacy, community outreach programs, and partnerships with rescue organisations, we work to ensure the well-being of all Pit Bull-type dogs and advocate for their fair treatment and equal rights as pets and members of society.” Education is needed for several reasons: Education: Awareness campaigns are essential for educating dog owners and the general public about the importance of dog wellness. Many people are not aware of the basic needs of dogs, such as proper nutrition, exercise, and regular veterinary care. By providing education and information on these topics, we can help people make better decisions for their pets, leading to healthier and happier dogs. Prevention: Awareness campaigns can also help prevent many common health problems in dogs. For example, regular exercise can help prevent obesity and joint problems, while proper dental care can prevent periodontal disease. By educating people on the importance of preventive care, we can help avoid many costly and painful health issues for dogs. Human-Animal Bond: Dogs are often considered part of the family, and the bond between humans and dogs is strong. By promoting dog wellness, we can strengthen this bond and enhance the quality of life for both dogs and their owners. This can also help reduce the incidence of behavioral issues and abandonment, which can result from health problems that are left untreated. Public Health & Safety: Finally, dog wellness is important not only for the well-being of individual dogs but also for public health. For example, regular vaccinations can help prevent the spread of diseases like rabies, which can be transmitted from dogs to humans. By promoting dog wellness, we can help ensure that dogs are healthy and safe members of our communities. Overall, funding for awareness campaigns in dog wellness education is crucial for promoting the health and well-being of dogs, enhancing the bond between humans and dogs, and protecting public health and safety.
